I was never and still am bad when it comes to applying for a job. I was always one of those people who thought ,who would want to hire me. When I grew up, it was better, but I still get so bummed out that I hate with a passion applying for a job. A job interview, I've always felt was easier.
One Day last week Elena and Nastia wanted some help filling out job applications. Elena's was for Target, a nice place to work from what I'm told and Nastia for Bath and Body Works. Both Jobs were in the Palisades Mall.
Everything is done on the Internet these days and it is nothing like what I used to do. In the old days, I'd get on my dinosaur ( I called it a CJ 5 Jeep) I'd start it up, spewing CO2 fumes into the already polluted atmosphere unaware that future generations would blame me for melting the polar ice cape. I know all of you are now driving battery powered cars in the future. I'd go to the store that advertised they needed help in the paper. The Paper? You don't know what that is? It's where you'd get your information from about the world and if you wanted false new you'd pick up the National Enquirer. If You want a real president, you'd go back to the... well, you'd have to go far back.
I'd drive up to the store in need of help, I'd ask them for a job application, fill it out and return it to them, hoping for a call back for an interview.
In the present, Nastia is on my computer, her sister is on her computer because she hit her computer and broke the hinge and it doesn't work any more. She will tell you it broke on it's own and she had nothing to do with it.
Nastia is applying to Bath and Body works, while Elena is applying to Target. Nastia applied to Target earlier and they said they didn't need help, though they had a sign up at the entrance.
The fun of this Day was going back and forth between the two answering questions about things that I felt were simple and straight forward, but to them who'd never done this it was a mystery.
After a while Elena finishes and it is just Nastia. I relaxed on the coach and of course I started to feel sleepy. Nastia would ask a question and need to ask it a second time and I'd still have problems with the answer. And she only asks questions as I am falling asleep and it jerks me awake. Just too much fun. She finally finished and I am left in peace until I have to make dinner, which I believe is fifteen minutes later,
THE JOB INTERVIEW FOR BATH AND BODY WORKS
I am at work when Nastia calls me to let me know Bath and Body works called and they want to interview her for a job at 3 pm. I won't get home until 3 and with Friday traffic I'll still be on the bridge at three. I tell her three-thirty, forgetting about Friday traffic.
It a hot and sunny Friday. I'd taken the Mustang to Elmsford and was looking forward to a comfortable drive home. I left a few minutes early to insure I'd get home in time and I swing out of the parking lot, turned on to 9A, hit a little Friday traffic and then a turn onto the Thruway and about a mile into my drive I slow down to a Friday crawl. I crawl towards the bridge and the Governors middle fingered salute to the people of Westchester and Rockland. Daddy's bridge is slated to partly open in December. He still hasn't confessed to the fact we'll have to pay $15.00 to cross it, but by then he hopes to be President, supplanting another fool.
I manage to get home about ten minutes later then I thought, Nastia is waiting outside, I pull up ,she gets in and off we go. Ten minutes to the mall. At this point she tells me she doesn't know where the store is. Her mom told her and I tell her to follow her mom's directions and I'll look on the directory. By the time I find in and go there she is in the store talking and smiling at the manager. She seems to sense me, looks my way. I turn and head toward the food court as the manager turns to look too. I was hoping to not be noticed so Nastia would look a little more independent and mature.
I settle in with my Nathans hot dog and fries and some stories on the internet about the Yankees and get lost in another world. Before I'm done Nastia is sitting at my table, eating my fries and drinking my soda. She is asking questions while I'm trying to read. She ends up getting fries and a soda she can't finish (surprise, surprise). I answer her questions as best I can. Is a short interview bad, Is the Bath and Bodyworks on the third floor and the first the same store. Do You want some of my fries? Life can be good sometimes, funny others.

Go South to go home
Our last day in Myrtle Beach was a bright sun shining day like all the others. Our Plane took off a little after noon and we were doing a quick one hour stop over in Atlanta before We headed home, real easy.
It didn't happen that way. Just before takeoff Teri says our connecting flight has been delayed. Now it would be over an hour We'd wait. Upon landing We find out the wait would be three hours. We were supposed to take off from Atlanta about three and land at LaGuardia around six. Now We wouldn't be taking off until after six.
We spent the time in Atlanta's huge airport sitting at our gate mostly. The subway ride from one Terminal took up all of five minutes and the only highlight was Elena saying she didn't want to hang on. I wish I could report it resulted in a specular spill when the train started quickly or stopped quickly, but alas it was not to be. There was no lesson to be learned there.
The only other excitement was a howling young child. The child, I think a girl was well over tired and started throwing a temper tantrum. She yelled about as loud as she could. Her poor tired parents let it go on hoping if ignored she'd stop, she didn't. Finally the exasperated Father puts her in the stroller, a little too hard. Hoping it didn't progress I turned to Teri and say I'm glad we never had them that young, I wouldn't of been able to handle it. The bawling continued.
I tell Teri I'm going for a walk to find something to eat. I head down the long corridors in Atlanta's Airport, the sound of the wailing Baby starts to recede. The further and faster I go the more her cries become an echo and the a memory of an echo. I stop in front of a food place that has soup/ I imagine I can still her the howling of that child. I think it is just my imagination. The sound gets to the point that I'm sure I hear the child, what a pair of lungs that child must have. I'm sure I'm imagining the cries are getting louder. Then off in the distance I see a stroller and the wailing child. Their heading in this direction. It's like looking at a car crash, I just can't turn away. About twenty feet from me the childs mother leans down and ina praticed church growl tells the child to stop. The voricity of her voice stops the childs cring, done, game over. She should run for president.
I get an expensive Mac and cheese meal and a Broccoli and Cheddar soup from the store. It was almost worth the price. The Mac and cheese has bacon and a few other items in it that I enjoy. Teri didn't say muchabout her soup.
Our Plane boards about 6pm and wetake off soon afterwards. The Air towards New Yorkis bumpy and everytime the pilot changes altitude abd you think he's got it the plane starts to bounce again. It is a short trip to LaGuardia and we land. As We taxi the Pilot tells us there are fifty planes backed up at the gates, but ours is open and We should be able to diembare soon. Other gates have a wait time of over an hour. An hour later We get to our gate and get off the flight.
It is about a ten hour drive to South Carolina. It took us about the same amount of time to fly. Modern Technology sucks when it don't work.

Myrtle Beach day three.
This day started again early for me. The sun to my dismay was shining in the window. After last night's rain it was another beautiful day. But as luck would have it no one was in a hurry to go to the beach.
Teri, again took the lead and got everyone to the beach in the early afternoon . I think it worked best for everyone that way. We were all in different states of being overly toasted. Amanda still was all pink from the shoulders down, Nastia was spotty, her face having recovered some. Elena's shoulders were red, but not as bad as could be. Teri held up surprising well, only burned in a few spots. Nick, well his chest was burned, but he had spent most of the day under the pier, out of the sun. Nancy, she doesn't burn it seems. Me, the tops of my feet. Even though I kept putting lotion on them.
On this last full day in South Carolina we went to another beach. It was also a state park and it also was mostly empty. It didn't have a pier, and there were no sea shells to hunt for, odd. We were only a few miles down the beach.
The Wind was back, but I was an old pro about it and set up camp with the cooler near me. Nastia wanted me to play catch with her with a football. I tried for as long as I could and a few things became obvious. The first was, I need to get my shoulder fixed. Second, I can still catch a football, even if it is only a nerf football well, I just can't throw it anymore. That lasted maybe twenty minutes. Teri and I then went hunting for interesting seashells. Then I went with Nastia, hunting. I saw Elena out with Nick in the surf. I knew Teri would not like it but I told her it was OK. Teriis very protective of the Girls. I'm trying to give them spaceand hope for the best. They are sixteen and eighteen, mentally they still act like they ae fourteen. I have seen changes, sporatic, but changes that makes me feel they will make great adults, when they get there.
The Day endedaround four-thirty. On the way to the house We stopped at a legel Moonshine store. It hade verything Moonshine. Teri bought some pickles cooked in moonshine, I think. The Girls had some, so I guess they had no alcohol in them.
We went home for seven showers. This time Nick said lets do it oldest to youngest. He said I should go first, I was insulted. I was the oldest, but I try to never act like I.more then fourteen, that is how I know the girls are acting like they are fourteen.
After Showers We went to the Dead Dog Saloon, where at the end of dinner I lectured Elena about spending money on food that you end up bring home. It always makes me crazy. I thought she had tuned me out, and I guess she did. She stared stright ahead like she used to when she was a little kid, while I'm asking her to acknowledge what I'm saying.
When She doesn't, I slam my hand on the back of this bench We were sitting in and walk off, angry. It ruined the evening and I'm sorry it happened. Teri was angry at me and we didn't talk again until later. She came into the bedroom, said she was sorry for being angry at me. I apologized for my anger. I explained why I was angry and how Elena is always bring food home from restaurants after eating little of it and sometimes it never gets finished.
Teri talked about how Elena went into her old routine from Russia days. I saw it, I had just dismissed it.
We call Elena into the room and I tell her what we had talked about and I apologized several time. I expected an apology back from her because of her behavior. Not receiving one, I let it go. Her moodbrightened quickly and everything was back to normal.
The next morning Teri and I ate the ribs, no comment about that necessary.

Myrtle Beach day 2
On Day two of the Myrtle Beach adventure, the Lobster family, or at least Teri and I get up about 7am. We are up at that hour because the sun is streaming in our window. Usually I'd be very happy for a day like that, but I am beat up from yesterday and I'm not the worst case. Nastia's face is still pretty red and Elena's shoulders don't look so good. The good thing is no one is in a hurry to get back out on the beach.
Teri decides to make deviled eggs. I make myself a cheese omelet. I eat early and just hang out in our bedroom reading and talking to Nastia's when she gets up or falling back to sleep. Everyone talks about returning to the beach, but no one makes a serious attempt to get anyone moving until Teri decides that one in the afternoon is late enough and We should be heading to the beach.
This trip, we have a cooler, food and drinks. The Wind has let up and the sky is overcast, but no sign of rain. I surrender to the inevitable and go to the beach.
It is again not crowded. The surf is still up, but not as bad as yesterday. We set up base camp, but with a cooler and yesterday's experience it is a better place. Before We hit the beach, a quick stop at the local Food Lion fills our cooler with ice and goodies. Chips, dips, cookies and other goodies await us on the beach.
The Wind is down to nothing. Our Beach umbrella is content to stay rooted in the sand. Teri and I begin the day by going hunting for sea shells. We walk along the beach enjoying each others company and not bothering about anything else, it's good.
Later in the day I'm near the water and Elena kicks water at me and if you know how things escalate between us it is a short time later we are chasing each other with handfuls of wet sand or trying to push each other in the water. Nastia gets involved somehow too and before it gets out of hand, the adult in me kicks in and I tell Elena we have to stop, there are small kids around.
The Day end as a storm front comes in from the south. A few rumbles of thunder and a crack of lightning and they close the beach. We head home for seven showers.
We go out to dinner at a seafood buffet called 'Crabby Jack's'. it's expensive, $34.95 per person, but it is good. Nastia grabs two plates of crab legs, Elena, who doesn't like seafood eats some crab legs among other things. This place has just about every type of food. Fried, broiled, baked, anyway you want seafood. I had prime rib and beef tips. I went down to get fried seafood, with the intention of trying the broiled when I hit the wall. I was full. So I switched to desserts and had a small piece of pecan pie, then cheesecake. I was full, but not stuffed. It was a fun evening, with good food, but a little expensive. Tomorrow is Day three of four.

Myrtle Beach on the way
The Day started early, 4am. Our flight departed LaGuardia Airport at 8am and I'd heard getting to the airport, with all the construction could be tough. Up at three, or there about, dress, something or drink, an option on food, no thank you from everyone asked.
Our Ride, to my surprise arrived at the correct time and off We go.
It's raining and on the way out the door I eye my sweater. It June, why would I need it, plus we are going south. I shut and lock the door leaving a sleeping Billy three confused dogs.
The Trip to the Airport is uneventful, if you consider the person giving the directions falling asleep nothing. I try to help out, and am not very helpful. It takes about an hour to get there with no problems. I guess not many people are interested in getting to the Airport at 5:30 for an 8 o'clock departure.
The Airport is empty and cold. Everyone on duty is standing around looking for something to do or trying to avoid doing something. We get to our gate before 6am and now I am content we will not miss our flight. And yes, I am still cold. Bastia, Elena, Teri, and Nancy all whip out sweaters and all I can do is dream of the warm sweater I chose to leave home.
A little after 8 they call boarding and we are in the third group to board and yes the plane is cold.
The Plane is a little odd for me. There are only two seats on either side of the isle. It reminds me of a 1950s movie.
We take off in an almost driving rain. I have to remind myself that just fish do care it raining, neither do planes.
There is a very short wait. The Captain guns his engine s and we're up and away.
A short two hour or less flight later we are on the ground in Myrtle Beach.
Everyone collects their belongings and Nick's cousins pick us up. The first thought I have after exiting the Airport is, it freakn hot and humid here. I appreciate the heat, but the humidity might get to me.
An other short trip later we're at the house. It's a one story house that is well kept that might of been built in the 60's. It is also has a home owners association.
The Day is sunny, the sky cloudless. A perfect day to head to the beach. With a storm front heading in, it might be our only day.
A short drive to the Park and a little wait to pass the Park entrance where people without passes pay and we're on the beach.
The Wind is whipping pretty good as We set up camp. We're unprepared for our stay on the beach. We do have the basic necessities, chairs, sun tan lotion, and for me a beach umbrella. Don't leave home without it. We did forgot drinks and food.
I try the sand spike Teri bought, but the Wind isn't cooperating. One side of the umbrella flexes down, while the other side wants to launch you like Mary Poppins into the air. I use whatever I can to tie the umbrella to my chair and even then the umbrella makes several attempts to fly away.
We stay out on the beach until about 4pm. By then everyone is in a state of well roasted. Amanda looks like she was dipped in Pepto Bismol. I've got a baseball size red spot on my knee where I must of missed that's all red. Nastia's face is all red like she's been crying. Everyone looks a little beat up. I'm hoping for rain tomorrow. We get home and go through eight showers. We head out to a place on the beach for dinner with Nick's relatives. We make a party of eleven.
Everyone had some good food. Our group of seven paid me and I used my debit card.
It had started a light sprinkle when we went into the restaurant. As We leave, it starts to pour. It rains most of the night. Everyone goes to bed thinking tomorrow we're going to the movies. Not so fast......

Bridge of Hope Party
THE BRIDGE OF HOPE REUNION IN CT.
I was looking forward to this. I was hoping CJ and Fran would come or at least Howard and his wife. I knew Patrice would be there and I was looking forward to seeing her and Linda. They were always the best when we were going through the adoption process.
The Day was hot, in a spring that had been a little cool and wet. The drive up, made by Teri, Thank You was not bad. Teri and I fussed over what to bring and she finally settled on a dip. At these gatherings I always feel like white trash. No one has ever treated me that way. They have always been very sweet and kind, but these last few years have been a little rough and we have not recovered like we would of liked to and the people who adopt like we did are usually of higher incomes, even when we were making good money.
We get there a few minutes after the time it was to start. Few people are there. I strike up a conversation with a women I don't know telling her stories about our trip to Russia and how CJ and Fran were with us and how he was learning Russian and it made ordering food very easy. After a while we wander away from each other.
The Other problem with the Bridge of Hope gatherings and I loosely take a quote from The Big Chill. We all knew each other for a short time a while ago. I wanted to sit down and talk to Patrice and Linda, because I do very much like them, but I had nothing to say beyond how are the adoptions from China going and did You ever do the Birobidzhan trip?
We all had some burgers and hot dogs and some Ice Tea. Around three O-Clock, We felt it was time to leave. I took a few pictures of the girls on a big rock and then some pictures of all the kids from Russia and we left.
I will go to the next one I hear about and the one after that. This will always be an important part of my life.

Fixing the side of the Pool
We decided to fix the pool up this year. Several Years ago I collapsed the side of the pool when I ran water I was draining from it on the elevated side and the wall bowed in. And over the last few years I'd made several attempts to fix it and only managed to make things worse. So this year Teri insisted that it was time to replace the pool liner. Early in the year, around February we contacted the pool company that Kristen works for. We wanted the work done early, like April.
Well about mid May I go run into the pool place. I'd been short of money, even though we'd had a movie filmed at our house and we're paid well. It's funny how while you are sleeping the money gnomes come and steal your money. We were quoted a price of $1,200.00 for a new liner. They would take the cover off, drain it remove the old liner, add sand where we needed it and put the new liner in. I was told it would be two weeks before the liner would be in and then they would schedule an appointment.
At five-thirty one late May day I Spanish fellow knocks on my door. He tells me he is here to do my pool. Trying to be nice, because I didn't want him to go away and never come back or worse come back late in the season, I explained to him I was not ready for him. He and his assistant opened the pool and started to drain it. I explained to him I needed time to dig out the side and I asked who much for him to do it. He said it would be on an hourly rate, as in they didn't know how long it would take them. I asked them to come back in a few days.
I start digging the hole the next day. I am or was a physical person and I jam the shovel into the ground, taking overly large shovel fulls of dirt and begin piling the dirt, more like clay a few feet away from me. My youngest daughter, Elena offers to help. She digs on the far side of where the hole will be and I'm where the cave in was worst. My hole is three times the size of hers in ten minutes. In fifteen minutes, I have to stop. As Danny Glover would say in 'Lethal Weapon' "I'm getting to old for this shit" Elena continues to dig. I dig sporadically over the next hour. We make some really good progress. As We head in that night I think I will be able to call the pool guys back before the weekend. It is Wednesday night.
It rains for most of the next three days. We try to get back out there. The hole was covered over, but the rain as rain will do found the lowest point it can and that was our hole. All the clay is sticky and slippery. When We are finished, muddy clay is stuck to the shovels and the buckets we tried to use and very little of it wants to come off. At the end of this day, I realize that the job to be successful, I must increase the size of the hole to almost double. As work progresses, I dig less. My elbow and shoulder are hurting and the more I do the worse they are. Like Danny Glover said...
After about a week of work the hole is nearing completion. Elena has done a good amount of the work and she has done all of the dirt jobs. The worst was getting down near the bottom of the side of the pool and clawing out the clay packed between the side and the bottom piece where the side should be.
I get home after the pool people have left. I see a bright shinny liner with about six inches of water in it. The day is bright and shinny and it reminds me why pool and summer go together. But when I'm still looking at the bill for this job in the middle of February, I will try to bring back that memory. I hope it will work.

Mother's Day 2017
For Mother's Day, Teri had said she didn't want to do something at home. I didn't want to go out so it was Wednesday before Mother's day before I sat down and really tried to come up with a place to go. Amanda, who has started to become a really responsible person reached out to me to help find a place to eat. I was told by Teri that Amanda worked from seven to three so it had to be a dinner. I knew Gilligan's was for Nancy's birthday the following Friday, so that was out. I finally came up with Bailey's Smoke House. I took a chance. We'd been there before, but I wasn't sure if Teri was going there for other people, or she liked it too. I told Amanda, she liked the idea.
On Mother's day we had a reservation for seven people at five PM. Our Table was upstairs in the bar and I could see the TV and the Yankee double header games. They beat the Astros in a come back win in the first game, retired Jeter's number 2 between games and in the night cap bought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth before losing, but I didn't watch the game while at dinner.
We decide on two combination dinners that would feed a small army. Nastia doesn't like BBQ so she wanted fish cakes. I thought she should have chicken, and her reply to why she didn't want to eat the chicken came out a little princessey. She said something like I don't want chicken , because I want fish. Whatever it was it hit Teri and I wrong. Teri took her outside to talk to her. When Nastia came back she was quiet. I tell Teri if she wants to give her fish cakes she can, and I won't care, but there is no reason for her to not eat the chicken. I look over at Nastia and she is now quietly crying. Again Teri and her go outside and when they come back her mood is better and dinner progresses.
The Food was good, we did order enough for a small army, everyone got left overs. We had enough for three meals.
Happy Mother's Day Teri.

The Evil Attic
It was Monday after work, I'd just finished giving a driving lesson to Elena and she had gone upstairs to take a shower before dinner. Nastia was looking for a portfolio for a school project. Elena just as she heads into the shower says there might be some in the Attic. I head out the door to drive around and look for some flower pots that come with store bought plants so I can plant vegetables in them at home. I'm gone about a half hour.
When I get back home I see there is a message on the answer machine, but before I play it back Nastia calls to see if it is me down stairs. She asks, "why don't you answer your phone?" I never heard it. She starts telling me she went upstairs and got locked in the attic (Flowers in the Attic??) and had to stay there until Elena finished her shower and let her out.(READ THE BOOK, if You don't know or see the 1980's movie, book was better)
After a good laugh, I play the answer machine back. It is Nastia calling the home phone asking to be let out of the attic. Even David laughed at her plight.
Teri had a bad day, some people at her job were let go, some were friends, so I saved it for her and it brightened her day, made her laugh.
I'm sorry Nastia if it hurt you, everyone laughing at what happened to you, it was something that made a bad day a little better.

Pre-Mother's Day running around
Mother's Day, it was like planning the invasion of Europe. I was Eisenhower. Nastia and Elena were Patton and Montgomery. I planned things and the helped execute things, without upsetting our Russian Allies. (That's a little joke Nastia says no one will understand, so I won't explain it) (Aw, hell you know I have to...Eisenhower had to preserve the Alliance against Hitler by keeping the Russians happy. I gave my children, the Russian tasks that would make them happy, simple, funny. Don't look at me that way it is funny....It's West Nyack funny)
D-Day (yes, we're still going with the WW2 theme) was Saturday, the day before 'The Mother's day"
At T-2 hours, noon civilian time, Elena comes up to me with a text she wrote me the day before about the gift she wanted to give her mother. I start reading it out loud. Elena jerks it away, giving me a look. It wouldn't do for Eisenhower to reveal part of the plan and be accused of having loose lips and sinking ships, Crises averted.
After Teri has left to do grocery shopping, the three of us pile into the car and just like D-Day, the weather is poor. It's raining, sometimes hard, but We soldier on.
Our first stop is a nursery in New City that used to be called Cropsey's, now I think it's Red Hill. I want a red dogwood tree for my mother. She has made comment recently that all of her dogwood trees are white and the one time she tried to buy a red one, the guy at Schimps Nursery, that used to be over near the middle school insisted the one he was selling her was red, it was white. We get there and the girls elect to stay in the car. I venture out and I am directed to cross a little bridge into the land of trees (my embellishment, you'll see why in a minute) I cross the bridge and enter a land of pretty flowering trees, I'm quickly walking around, because it is still raining, when a stranger appears from out of a flock of dwarfed red maples asking me what is my quest? I tell the noble spirit that I seek a red or pink dogwood tree. His reply is crisp and quick, that I have arrived at the land of Tree's of Statement and if I look to my left I will see trees starting at three-forty-three. I look at my watch wondering how time has flown so quickly in the land of statement trees. I ask the benign spirt the price of his noble green and pink friends and again he tells me the time, they start at three-forty-three. This time I've gotten the joke, I had inadvertently wandered into the land of dreams. I smile and tell the noble protector of the gold bearing denizens that I'm just looking for a give for Mom, not a statement. He bows and in a cloud of red dust or maybe red maple leaves disappears into his home make forest of statement trees.
I smile as I turn occasionally laughing at having survived my adventure in the land of statement trees, but deep in my heart I only feel pity for those who have come before and those who will come after and be lured by the sweet serine's song to spend starting at three-forty-three, money on a statement tree, poor bastard!
Our Quest, our invasion has not been defeated, only given something to write about in a blog. We will soldier on, next to another nursery!
Our next stop after the magical world of Statement trees was to be another nursery center on Sickletown road. I can never remember their name We instead do a quick side trip to the local liquor store and a discount card store. I head for the liquor store to buy some rum chatta for Teri and the girls head for the card store to buy cards.
After that we are on our way to the nursery on Sickletown road. Its raining again and I go alone after confirming that the girls don't want to go. (Yes this will circle back in our story, it's the second time no one has wanted to go with me. That's okay, I didn't want company) I find Red Dogwood trees at $199.00 and some others at $139.00. I guess they don't stock statement trees. I did find vegetable plants at a cheaper price then Home Depot or Lowes $3.00 each. So I buy a few large singles at $2.49 and some four packs at $1.99. (I remember in the 60's when the price for a six place was less then a dollar. Wake Up.) Now having found only vegetable plants to buy at a reasonable price I get the brain storm to go to Home Depot. Why didn't I think of that before. They have trees and if they are not too abused they are reasonably priced, but are not statement trees, sadly. We head off to Home Depot. It is raining harder now then it has for most of the time We have been out. So I tell the girls I'll be back quickly. Nastia pipes up, (here it comes) I'll go with you and help you get a tree. I stop for a moment, then it hits me, David works at Home Depot. So I lay into her about the only reason she wants to go is to see David. I realize I am being a little hard on her so I circle back (see how that comes into it too) to a nicer tone and tell her she has two minutes to talk to him. She says she'll stay. Then I , hopefully in a nice tone tell her she doesn't have to stay in the car just because she wanted to go into Home Depot just to see David and I called her on it. She stayed anyway. Home Depot had no Dogwood trees.
We go to Lunch in the Mall then head home with our bounty. Mother's Day is tomorrow and I think We have it covered. Elena got her a copy of A Dog's purpose, which she didn't wrap I guess because I didn't tell her to. Never thought I had to. Nastia got her a Sephora's gift card. I got her the Rum Chatta. My Mom did get her Pink Dogwood Tree, but I had to order it on line and it will get there about midweek.

Nastia's Junior Ball
The Junior Ball, a time for people, girls, may daughter to look forward to, to gat excited about dressing up and having some supervised adult fun. The beginnings of being an adult.
Teri and Nastia went out sometime before the junior ball to pick out a dress, correction, the proper dress.
Now Nastia has been bowling with me this year, starting sometime about the beginning of April she started asking me when bowling ended because she wanted to get her nails done for the Junior Ball. Every so often she would ask again. She probably only asked a few times, but to me it seemed every time I turned around she was asking. Bowling ended the end of April and thank god there was time to get her nails done.
The day of the Junior Ball was a Friday. She had our permission to get out of school early. She never really asked, but Nastia and Teri were going to need the time. Teri was working for home. Nastia texts me soon after school starts that she needs a note to leave early. Silly Us should of thought about that one. I write up a note and bring it over.
Nastia gets picked up around noon and Her and Teri go get her hair and nails done. Lat5er that day, sometime after three they both arrive home. Nastia has her hair braided. To me it looked poorly done, I told her it looked nice. Later after she gets dressed it did look nicer.
About five, I guess Nastia starts to get ready. I'm hanging around in the kitchen drinking a beer figuring I'll be a spectator. Around six-thirty or so it starts. David is late. David is always late. David said something about someone being in the bathroom or something or other. I really wasn't listening. I didn't care. I had my beer, it was Friday and I was relaxing in the Kitchen. I think I even got out some Doritos. It's now 6:45 and I hear that they have to be there by seven-thirty or they will not be allowed in. I hear my wife mention my name. She's requesting I drive Nastia to the Junior ball and David to me her there, because there is not enough time. I agree and get my car keys. It is six-fifty now. I can see redness in Nastia's eyes. She is either upset or the cold she has been fighting is starting to win. At almost seven, I'm sitting in the car, David texts or calls Nastia that he is on the way and she says she will wait for him. I say nothing, I have said nothing through this whole incident. I will say nothing until She is on her way and I will only say it to Teri, until now. David always puts his family in front of Nastia. He is always canceling things with her because of his family. I guess it is expected, but when you have a girlfriend there are times like this one where you should be on time or early. there was no excuse for him being late on a night like this. Knowing Nastia it didn't effect her evening. She is the type of girl/women who can and does find the bright side of most any disaster or at the worst comes out smiling after it is all over. I hope life never robs her of that and I'm glad I haven't either.

What the heck did she eat?
Mesha, or Misha as Teri says it is spelled the second way, is a bright energetic dog who is a bully to Athena and Nancy's dog, Navel. Is scared of Bandi and has too much energy for her and everyone else's good. She is a great dog, much loved. We got her just after I lost my job at Cream-O-Land Daries. It was April or May, when Teri heard that Dapper Dog had some rescue German Shepherds and in our phone call Teri informs me that Elena wants a German Shepherd. I don't want to spend the money, but Teri says she'll pay for it, we have enough money for the dog. I counter that we already have two dogs and a cat, that's enough. We don't need an other dog. On my way to get the dog Teri calls and says there is only one left, so hurry. I don't. I get there in time to get this small ball of fur to bring home adoption fee is $500.00. A deal, because if you bought one from a breeder, it would be at least twice that. I get her home, the girls are at school, it is a bright sunny day, unemployment has not gotten me down yet, so I take the brown ball of fur outside and introduce the other two to her. She reminds me of a bear, so I call her bear. I take video of her and everything is good.
Flash forward three and a little more then three quarters of a year and we have just gotten paid for our house being used in a movie and we are just settling back into a normal life, when Teri walks into the house and says she smells poo. We both walk around and yea, the house smells, but no mess. Teri notices something hanging out of the southern end of a north bound Mesha. We shoo her outside and Teri, always the brave trooper says, "You hold her and I'll pull it out." I grab her around the stomach, Teri, her hand covered holding a paper towel gives a tug and Misha gives out a little yelp. It's off to the vet.
Teri's friend Sally Ann's brother, Uncle Doctor Eddie, is a vet, but he lives and practices in upstate New York, too far away. Our only choice is Valley Cottage Animal Hospital. I have nothing but bad memories of the place. It is the place we bring animals to die, who get sick on a weekend. We took Cody there because she wasn't eating. It was a Sunday, Her kidneys had quit working, she never left alive. It still kills me all these years later. I feel I betrayed her. It was just because she wasn't eating and she ends up being put to sleep. It was just so unfair, no one w3as prepared for it. We'd just gotten the girls six months earlier.
We bring her in. The Doctor looks at her feels her stomach and says he will have to operate. The sooner the better. She ate something and if it is bad he will have to cut open her intestines, maybe cut out some dying part if it is real bad. She could die. It could also be easy to remove and she'll be fine.
We leave a deposit of $2500.00 on a balance which could reach $10,000.00. We tell him to call us once it is over, no matter the time. He says he will operate hopefully within the hour.
I think we received a call about nine-thirty that night. Teri picked it up. I happened to be walking by. Early in the conversation she gives me a thumps up, it looks good, it was an easier operation then expected. He was able to milk it out (like as in milking a cow.) (his words) to remove it. What was it, maybe panty hose. She was to be kept quiet for up to two weeks, We made it a day, maybe two before she was her self and as active as ever. We thought about giving her Benadryl to quiet her down, instead we took away all of her balls for a week. We purchased a blow up tube instead of the cone of shame ( see the movie 'UP' if you don't understand) It was too hot for her to wear.
Later in the week Athena and Mesha got into a fight and Athena popped it, a little pool patch, good as new.
About two plus weeks later, she has a scar, a shaved belly and no after effects from her adventure. I guess God does protect the dumb sometimes. He has for me.

The Movie People
This was written after the fact over a few days. The facts maybe jumbled, but are true.
It sounds like the title of a low budget horror film.
It started somewhere at the beginning of March or the end of February. The weather was warm for that time of year and the four of us were surviving the winter.
At the end of a day, maybe a Thursday or Friday, I pull out of the mail box a flier. Me, being me, well I start grumbling about how no one is supposed to put fliers in mail boxes without postage.
I'm gonna make a great grumpy old man. Elena likes to imitate me as an old man yelling at kids to 'get off my lawn!'
I walk back through our door that was painted green for the cable show damages starring Glen Close and read that a movie company wants to film in our house and would I be interested.
Damages paid a thousand dollars a day over three days back in 08', hell yeah I'm interested. I didn't call Teri and ask her if she was interested in doing it because last time it was easy money and we bought a pool with the money. I call the number and leave a message with my number, name and address. A little while later I get a call back from a women named Ana. She says that she would like to come by later today and she is over in upper Westchester, forty-five she'll be by. It was after four pm and I didn't question her on it. I figured she knew something I didn't. About an hour later she called and asked if we could reschedule, I was happy to. I didn't want to be disturbed at dinner time. The one thing I didn't know was it would be a pattern with most everyone involved in this movie. The would over promise and under deliver.
Ana and I got together the next day after 4pm. She walked through the house saying all these nice thing. How it was all original and looked wonderful. How it was just what they were looking for and so on. I thought she was just being nice. I figured we had little or no chance of them filming in our house. The Great Recession had put a dent in our finances and the house we bought needing to be fixed up to begin with now needed other repairs in addition to the ones we had not gotten to.
The next week Ana bought by a group of about six people to look at the house. I stuck two of the dogs outside and Athena did her wet blanket imitation making it impossible to pick her up. If you managed to she would nip at your hands hard enough that you would think twice about picking her up, so she stayed on the couch barking until she decided it was okay for these people to be in her house.
The group included the director, someone with the art and someone with design I think. They too loved the house and said a lot of nice things that I had a hard time believing, but they were very nice and they insisted this was the type of house they were looking for.
Back a few years ago an other group of people came to the house looking to film a British TV show about two people who switch houses. One from America and the other from Britain. They looked over our house too and I felt that we didn't have a prayer for that show. I felt almost the same about this movie.
Ana asks if they could bring a group of people by the next week, maybe a Tuesday. The group would come in a bus and there would be about twenty.
The Monday before or maybe even that day she calls and says they are running behind could they reschedule for Wednesday. I counter with Thursday. Having already had to cancel another visit on a Wednesday when someone was running late and I wanted to go bowling with Nastia.
There was a visit by a gentlemen sometime around this time who came in around dinner time to measure the size of the rooms. I remember he was a nice friendly guy, but he was in my house around dinner time and Teri was going to be home at any minute and I wanted him to leave. What I ended up doing was what Confucius one said and Tex Antoine, a weatherman on ABC news said to end his career on the station and is not a correct thing to say AND I will sanitize, 'If it is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it' so that is what I did. I talked to the guy a little, watched him take his measurements and he was gone in under an hour. He also arrived a little late, having gone to an other house before us.
The Bus full of people arrive promptly an hour later then they originally promised, but in there defense, they did call and let me know they were running behind. I meet the bus outside and tell them all to make themselves at home and they can park the bus in Ann, my neighbors driveway. The twenty people all pile out of the bus and I greet the first few with hand shakes.
The Dogs are all upstairs with Nastia and Elena and they will bark until they feel the people downstairs understand they mean business. This is their house. The People break off into smaller groups, the Director talking about how she wants to shoot a certain shot, where Peter Dinklage walks into the house and sees the dead bodies. Another where Peter walks into Nastia's bedroom to take an afghan off the bed, how she might want the camera in the hall or maybe at the door, so the set design person she is talking to has to have this wall and this wall made up, but not the wall to the west.
I mostly stayed out of the way, answering any questions asked of me or talking to anyone who came over to my perch on the stairs.
The visit lasts around an hour and the dogs, staying in my room with Nastia were reasonably quiet the whole time. Everyone thanks me and troops out the door.
I think around this time Ana comes over to the house to have me look over the contracts and sign them. This is a painless and quick exercise lasting maybe half an hour.
The list of events involved in having a movie in your house stretches so much longer then Damages. With Damages, they contacted us, looked over the house, set a two day period that stretched to three. Came in set up the house, shot two days instead of one and paid us. It lasted only a few days. The Movie, 'I think we're alone now' stretches the whole of the month of March, over several visits and involves a lot more people.
Friday, the 24th of March they come to set up the house. Ana hands me an envelop, Athena and Bandi go to Teri's parents house, Mesha goes to my Mom's house. Teri and I devise a plan to get my Mom's dogs and Mesha to accept each other. I take my Mom's dogs, two Golden Retrievers for a walk, we meet Meisha and Teri on the street. Meisha is so afraid that she tucks her tail between her legs and then proceeds to pee on it. My big bully of a German Shepard.
I leave Teri and the dogs to go and watch set up and answer any questions. I expect to head into work before noon, I never make it. They arrive late after a call and are at the house well past noon, past two. I don't remember when they left. They didn't even finish, which was a good thing considering they were going to use the Parlor, the living room, the dining room, the kitchen and Nastia's bedroom. At day's end they had set up the living room and dining room with dead bodies. They hadn't dusted yet. This is not the good dusting where you go around with a vacuum and pick up dust, it is the opposite, more on that later.
I guess they finally left somewhere around five. It was a Friday after all and no one wanted to work late. For the weekend we lived with two dead bodies in our house. I tried to not think about it, at night ,when the lights were out because it was spooky. The bodies were rubber, but if you looked close, the one at the table looked like Nastia and the guy in the chair looked like me.
Friday night was a boring night. You don't realize how much TV you watch until it is taken away from you. The TV in the living room was replaced with a 1980's style square picture style TV. On Saturday, I managed to hook up the TV to cable and it was weird looking at a square TV picture again. I forgot how much TV's have changed since We bought my Dad a TV in the late 80's. It was one of the biggest sets out at the time. I thing it was like 32". Now it would be considered small.
Cable was disconnected Sunday night and on Monday they all came back. The only good thing about the extra set up day was We get paid for an extra set up day (yeah!!) Things get set up.
Tuesday arrives overcast, the clouds and the weatherman say we're getting rain. Maybe it will hold off? I'd taken that day off figuring I wasn't going to miss out on this again. I talked to Rolando on Friday and he said they would arrive at 5:30AM. Naturally I am awake at 4:45AM. I'm laying in bed when I hear a car pull up. I get out of bed, get dressed and go outside. It is a little chilly, but it is still March and everyone know March can go either way. We'd had a big snow storm early in the month and We'd had rain the week before the movie was to shoot to get rid of the snow and we'd also had some 50 degree days. Rolando asks me if there is a place they can set up their video village. I'd shown him the cellar and the attic on Friday. Eventually we'd agreed the best place was the garage. Yes, the Mustang with the soft top roof and it's holes and the window that will not work were in there. I'd chance it that it would not rain while the car was out. When have I ever been wrong on something like this? ( yea, I can't write it with a straight face either.) I take the car out of the garage, the top won't clip into place so it is only like 98% of the way closed and the back window won't go up and I park it on the street and they ask me to move it to the church at the corner of Kings and Lake road and yes it rains all day long.
Around 6AM things get going a little quicker. One of the Movie People, whose name I've forgotten (sorry) comes up the stairs where Teri and I are. He says that Peter Dinkledge has arrived and please don't take pictures of him, people at the other house did and it was very annoying for him . He doesn't like pictures. I have to go down stairs, I think someone needed to talk to me about something and I come down to a house that looks like it was mine in another life, but isn't mine now. It's full of people doing things and there are two dead (plastic) bodies (still) in the house. I go into the kitchen and Peter is there with the director. I talk to the director I think, and Peter comments about the dogs and what type pf dogs they are? We have a quick conversation about them and I understand it is a job and it is by now maybe 6:30 or so and people treat movie stars weird, so I have to complement and thank Peter Dinkledge for be a gentlemen and taking the time and making an effort to have a conversation with me, as short as it was.\
We leave the House, the girls go to the bus, Teri and I go to drop of the dogs. I don't think it has more then sprinkled to this point. The temperature is a little chilly at this point too, somewhere in the low 40's. I leave Mesha at my moms, who will or has left for Florida today. This is an important point, because on Monday when Mesha was left alone at my Mom's house she destroyed a lot of things trying to either get out or was barking at things. She even messed on the rug in the office.
I head back to the house intent on seeing them film some of this movie.
Back in 08, when Damages was filming, I had to work. I had an appointment to see someone and my boss, Tom Schappa was going alone with me. Him and I were in one of our periods where I could do nothing right for him and there was no way I would ask for the day off. Him and I had a rough relationship during my time at Marcus Dairies.
When I get back to the house, I think I am asked to come back inside.Ana is there and she tells me to put away anything that I don't want dusted. (yea, this is the later) As explained above, they are putting dust on everything to make it look like it has not been occupied for a long time. As I was leaving I was asked if they could go and use some items we had in the basement. Like usual, trying to be nice and helpful and without thinking I said yes. BIG MISTAKE! I go outside. Some of the events during the time of Friday, Monday and Tuesday are a little muddled in my head, so if some of the sequences are wrong or out of order, the general narrative and events are real and did happen.
I end up back at my mom's house. This is were I think some of the events are out of order. I think I didn't leave my mom's house and go my house and return, because I do go to the set later in the day and I get a call from one of the movie people when I'm sitting in my car over on South Conger Ave getting warm after trying to look through the back gate to see what is happening. Maybe that is when I am asked if it is Okay to use items from the basement and Ana told me to put away anything that I didn't want dusted happened around the time I talked to Peter, maybe, I'm not sure. All these things happened, I've just forgotten the order.
I hang around outside, I sit in my car, I move my car over to South Harrison to the corner of my property. I think I am asked to move my car. The person who calls me is not very clear in his conversation. I do move after about ten minutes, so if I was asked to move my car because it would of been in a shot they were taking, sorry.
I leave and go have lunch. When I come back, the rain has let up, some, more will come, my poor Mustang.
A hang out, outside my house across the street, it is raining, again and I'm getting soaked and it is making the cold weather even colder. I take some pictures of everything that is set up, because it looks like nothing is going on. I miss getting a picture of Elle Fanning twice. The first time is when she is leaving the house and the second time is when she comes back.
Once I hear everyone yell quiet, I know they are filming, everything else is the same. It's raining, I'm cold and everyone outside is standing in the rain doing a job or waiting under a tent to be told it is their time to do their job. I leave, I'm freezing. I get in my car and drive it over to the lot behind the store fronts done the street on Lake road. From there I can see everything that is happening (and nothing is happening) outside of the house. I do see them film one scene outside. It is a simple scene where a truck pulls up to the house and Peter gets out and walks to the house, they do it twice.
It is late in the day by now and I'm tired of all the nothing I have witnessed.
Teri and I decide to go out for dinner. The four of Us go to The Chees Cake Factory. I wasn't too happy to spend the money, but for now we were flush. We sit down and are given menus. Teri starts to question Elena about her grades. The conversation goes something like, "Elena how are you doing in Health?"
I got a fifty-five for the quarter" My head jerks up, I don't say anything. "I brought that up from a fifty." I hear a note of pride in her voice.
I start to say something about how the hell can she be proud of absorbing half of everything done in that class when Teri interrupts me. She starts to say something and my phone rings, it's Ana from the movie, she says they are cleaning up the house so the girls can use the bedroom and the bathroom and could I come by. I know a good exit sign from a place I don't want to be in so I tell her I will be there in ten minutes. Teri more concerned about me eating thinks I should stay. I want to and need to get out of there. I can't be around Elena right now. It is too maddening. I get the hell out of Dodge. while the getting is good. I promise to pick them up as soon as they are done.
I get Mesha and head home intent on getting things back to normal as soon as possible. It's still raining. Everything around the house is drenched. The north lot if walked on will give up its grass and you will slide digging your heal into a pile of soft red clay. I walk through the house. There is no one there. I go with Mesha upstairs to check the place out. The upstairs isn't too bad. I'm thinking it will be difficult to get this straightened out. I go around closing and locking doors and gates so I can let Mesha go and go get the other two dogs. I remember the Mustang is parked down the street at the church. I close the front door and lock it, walking toward the Church. I glance over toward the gate on the north side of the yard and it is wide open. I hustle over the soggy grass, my sneakers soaked on the first step. I close the gate and on my way back to the road, I find a sink hole and do a truly great job drenching my left foot. I get to the Mustang, the lot surprisingly is not empty. I pull the cover off the top fold it and throw it in the trunk. I get back to South Harrison, in front of my house, just in time to see Mesha walking down the middle of the road. I call to her in a voice that must of made her feel she was in trouble because she walked away from me. I try for a friendlier voice and manage to grab her. I get her back into the house and there is Ana and a few of the movie people cleaning the girls bedroom and the bathroom, going way beyond their job description to make it possible to get the girls to bed at a reasonable time and get life back to normal for them. They were great. I check the back gate, it is wide open, shut it and get into the Escape to go get Athena and Bandi when Teri calls, They are done eating. I divert to get them. We go to Teri's car, she takes the girls home and I go get the two dogs. The night is almost done. A quick snack for me and everyone goes to bed. It is done for the day. Tomorrow the cleaning people come while I'm at bowling, Elena was okay with them being there, I was not until I found out they were three women. They cleaned, I tipped, they were gone. Its over..... Would I do it again? Hell yeah, just with eyes open more.

It's a matter of trust. ( from 3/13/17)
I don't think Nastia is an evil person, I think the first few years of her life she basically was able to do anything she wanted, out of the sight of Adults. She took care of Elena and had freedom.
This past Saturday, both were given an opportunity to be responsible. The Plan was we were all going to go to 'The Autobahn' mini car track at the mall and the girls could use their gift certificates. After that Elena and Alex could doing something and Nastia and David would have dinner somewhere.
The Autobahn racing has a rule that if you bump anything more then twice, you must leave your car. Elena bumps the opening as she enters the track. At a nasty U-turn she bumps the outer wall. Next time around she slams right into the same wall, she seemed to not even turn. She exits the track.
Nastia drives the course like she is out for a Sunday drive. She goes around at a moderate pace, taking turns gently. I don't remember her hitting anything until she scrapes a wall and is asked to leave. She doesn't argue, but is glad to leave. She says "It wasn't my thing."
Teri and Nancy leave to go food shopping and I hang out. I have no plan and I decide to take some time to come up with one. Teri asks if I'm staying? I didn't know at that time.
I hang out and everyone has disappeared. I text Elena to find out what her plan is with Alex. It's around three in the afternoon by now and Nastia doesn't have to meet David until 4:45.
I text Elena and ask her what is she doing? She says she is having tacos. I ask where is Nastia? I'm told, she is at Back Stage. She was told to stay together with her sister, so I rush up there trying to keep my temper. Nastia has a streak in her that when She is told to do something, like stay with her sister, but it conflicts with something she wants to do she will do what she wants to do if she thinks she can get away with it. I have no trust in her word any more, for that matter, in a long time. Think back to last year. Elena decides she wants to see a movie with Alex, but doesn't have money. Of Course Father know best says he will 'loan' her the money. (It's in quotes, because I'll never see it again and it turns out I don't even get change)
I find Nastia at Back Stage. I take her hand treating her like a three year old and start to walk her back to the food court, while trying to keep my temper and telling her this is how a three year old is treated. I then launch into how she doesn't follow directions and I remind her about a TV show we watched and one of the characters after receiving a phone call yells to is wife, "You know that thing that you said would probably never happen but might, well I think it just did. It gets a smile from her. I admit to her it might never happen and I hope it doesn't, but why take the chance. I then give her the money for her sister and I give her some money so she has enough for dinner with David. I tell her to have David meet her at the movies. She runs off to the Movies on the forth floor and I do a slow walk, feeling very unhappy about the whole thing and head down to the third floor. As I pass under where the movies are I look up and there is Nastia high tailing it out of the movies. I'm burning again. Do I let it lie or do I go find her and cancel dinner with David because of her ignoring me. I already know what she will say if I confront her later, that she was waiting for David out front of the movies. I continue to walk to the car. I just don't want to deal with it and later I will wish I'd gone up to find out where she was, because when I finally confront her she will say exactly what I thought she would.
It lies, They have dinner, David and Nastia, then bring home Elena. Teri and Nancy and I go to dinner at Charlie Browns and everything is left for Sunday afternoon when I ask Teri what I should do and her reaction is to call Nastia into the Kitchen and the three of us get into it, she says she waited for David at the movies and I told her I saw her high tailing it out of the movies and she slides right into 'I was waiting for him in front of the movies.' It most likely a lie, but I'll never know and I don't trust her. It's sad.

Who let the Dog out??* and Lights, camera, action?
*Yeah, I know it's a tired line from a song no one should remember, but even in the distant future people will.
Yesterday, I got out of work and had some Nathans, got Bandi from the groomer before heading home to meet the movie people after four. I'll talk more about that later.
I was greeted at the gate by Mesha, no big deal she knows how to open the door and how to open the gate, but We have a rope on the gate and usually the door gets closed completely with a little lift.
I go inside and see there is a message on the answering machine. A Neighbor, Donna is calling at 9:30 AM saying she sees our dog outside the gate, running around trying to get back in the fence. I do a quick look around and count, all three dogs are here. The message acknowledges that everyone must be at work or school, but she is concerned about the dog getting hit by a car. I thank God for whatever happened and sit down in front of the computer to go on line when the phone rings. I usually don't pick it up, but this time I do and it is Donna our neighbor, who owns Buddy, the other German Shepherd in the neighborhood. She explains how her and her boyfriend saw the dog trying to get back inside and how she ran over to their house and how her boyfriend let the dog in the fence and put a stick in the lock to keep it closed. All this time I'm saying to her thank you, thank you... My fear is Mesha will get out and someone will find her and sell her, not try to return her. This is the sick world we live in today.
Now to the Movie. A couple of weeks ago I found a flier in my mail box asking us to consider letting a movie production company film the movie, 'I think We're Alone Now'. I jumped on it and they are filming for a day at the house sometime this month and until then it seems like a long stream of people are coming out to look at the house. Today's was the forth time in the last two weeks. They are also coming out Friday and again on Tuesday. Tuesday, they are bring a bus full of people, twenty. It's fun sometimes.

Hey DMV, I'm Bbbbbaaaack*
*A play on a scene from Independence day, you know when the drunk flies his plane at the space ship just before it blows up. Do I have to go further? You didn't see the film? What is wrong with this generation**
** That's a message to the future who think that all films that are not made in surround are boring. Yeah, when it's invented I want credit for naming it.
Yes, we all knew it would come and I put it off for six month's, but she asked me if we could go and I was slow thinking up an excuse, so without my knowledge my mouth said, "Yeah, sure I'll take you over on Thursday, they have late hours."
She texts me at work just before I was leaving, up until then I was dreaming of what I was going to have for lunch and the good book that Iv'e gotten into. When I read it I hear my dreams of lunch crash and shatter like a coke glass hitting a marble counter, shards everywhere. impossible to piece together.
I drive home, picking up some McDonald's on the way home to eat. I go inside and gather my papers, hoping I have what is needed, expecting them to say I don't.
The two of us drive up to Haverstraw and I'm giving her my speech on my expectations for teaching her and her sister at the same time. Iv'e taken a deep breath, I was a quiet kis when I was younger and I saved up all my words so I ramble on for most of the trip. Is she listening? I don't check, I'm in the zone dispensing pearls of wisdom she would lead a poorer life if she missed.
We pull up to the southern end of the building. We have tangled before, the two of us. In the end I will win, if I stay strong. I stop myself before I yell "Take no Prisoners!" and tap my boots against the sides of my camel. (What? You don't understand what I just said? It's another movie reference. You guys got to get up to date on all of your movie trivia if you are going to read me. The movie was and is 'Lawrence of Arabia' staring Peter O'Toole, great actor. It was filmed in 1962? Yeah, 1962, that was just after World War 2, and no I don't remember it.)
We stride confidently into the lions den and up to the bridge of Terror to face out first task (Monty Python?? Bridge of Terror?? Ask these questions three??).
Ok, your no fun. We go to a small kiosk just past the doors, I look to my left and see a long line of people waiting. The Wizard from scene 23 asks "What is your quest?(Monty Python??) I say Learner's permit. He hands us a form and a ticket, A254, lucky A254, hummm. I look up and see they just called A251, lucky A254, hummm.
I go to work on the paperwork. Growing up my writing was compared to my father's. The nicest thing said about it was it looked like chicken scratch ( A Chicken scratching in the dirt). Over the years Iv'e worked hard to improve it and if I'm not stressed, it's pretty pretty. Elena prints like my Dad wrote, chicken scratch. I swear I went to Russia in 2000, had drunken sex with a Russian girl and made Elena. She is so like me.
I finish the paperwork and Elena and I sit down to wait. I explain to her we are waiting forA254 to come up even though it seems close, they will call other numbers with other letters in front first. And they did, they eve called some number behind A251. The wait wasn't as bad as it was back in the 80's when everyone stood in line after line waiting.
After about twenty minutes, her number is called. We go to the same window Nastia and I went to, but we got an Indian guy.I go with a smile and good humor, but this guy had a long day and killed my good mood very quickly with his 'I don't care' attitude.' I know it is a hard job and I would never want to do it. I show him all of Elena's paperwork, to my surprise, he tells her to go and get her picture taken. I try to get her to smile, it doesn't work. We are told to sit down and wait again. Another fifteen minutes later her number is called and I go with her into the test room. I know I shouldn't and I am babying her through this whole experience, but I can't help it. The test monitor asks me to leave and after I know she has all her paperwork in, I go. About ten minutes later she exits and says she got seven wrong. Her problem is she is having problems understanding the questions. Well Nastia had to go four times before we got to the test. I guess we're ahead of the game so far.

A very Early Spring
This past weekend things got warm. Not warm for a February day, but warm for an April day. The temperature has been warm most of the week. It was not lower then the upper 30 and then this weekend it went into the 60's. Global Warming, sometimes you just got to love it.
With the warm temperatures the girls and I started some yard work early. We got most of last years leaves up off the backyard.
It seems every year I don't get the leaves up before it snows. I do go out there and rake, but the neighbor has a tree, a huge tree that doesn't loose it's leaves until after December 1st and it usually snows shortly after that, not a lot, but who normally wants to rake leaves, much less rake them while they are wet and it has just snowed and it is cold out.
I took pictures of the girls working outside. I promised each I would pay them for the work. The first picture is Elena working and the second is Nastia.
Nastia? yeah, she's supposed to be working behind where the dog is.
Elena was a vegetarian for a while this winter. It was a bit of a hassle, so I think that is why she quit. Plus there are a lot of foods with meat in them that are fun to eat. Neither Kid has been very big on beef all their life. If you want to make their eyes light up put potatoes in front of them. That's the Russian weakness. Hey, Vodka is make from potatoes, go figure.
Elena is also gotten into exercising. She likes going to the gym at the park on Conger's Lake and doing the treadmill. She then goes over to the bench and does several sets there. She starts out just lifting the bar, which weighs in the twenties. She later adds some fives to it. This pleases me very much. I was afraid when I first heard her doing this she would want to go for muscle mass and on a girls it never looks good. It looks like she is going for toning, which always looks good on women.
I watched her train for a little while and I took her home after about two hours. It was interesting, I'd never been to this building in the park. The Girls discovered it a few years ago and wanted me to get them their passes to use it. I managed to get them up a few weeks ago, early on a Saturday and got them over to the town's parks dept. and it took all of a few minutes and just me showing my ID. I didn't have to try and explain that my Wife and I adopted them from Russia and all of their need paperwork is in Russian.

Bang the car slowly*
* I doubt anyone will get the reference. It's a play off of the title of a book I read in the 70's called Bang the drum slowly. It was made into at least two movies, one with Paul Newman in the fifties and one in 73 with Michael Moriarty and new comer Robert DeNiro. I must of purchased the book without the knowledge of the film. I didn't see the second movie for years.
Bang The Car Slowly, if you haven't guessed has nothing to do with the book or either of the two movies. The book and movies are about a baseball player that is dying of Hodgkin disease.
Bank the Car Slowly is what happens when you pull into a parking space against a building and don't use the brake, ever. Both stories are a little bitter sweet and you feel bad for the main character.
Except for DeNiro and Newman and the fact I read the book and it is the title of this piece, it has nothing to do with the story, 'Bang the Car Slowly' So I will not do a comparison between the two, because any comparison would come out mean and lord know who's mean, (no, not me, never).
Bang the Car Slowly stars the dramatic actress (I hate they have stopped using that word, liberal assholes!! Don't get me wrong I hate Conservative/ Republican Assholes even more. They are making liberals seem reasonable. Sorry about that. I had to get some poison out of my system.I mean whatever happened to the center! opps, doing it again, sorry) Dramatic Actress Anna Muller, yes, Anna Muller,
Setting the scene: It is mid-winter, the sun is still up, last week her father commented how the days are getting longer and how it is now almost sunny out. Anna's first line is"Whaaaat?" She doesn't believe her father ...again. (Who'd blame her after telling her and Elena that during the inauguration of Donald Trump, They saw a kid walking in the parade. It was Baron Trump and I said he was part of the Spy Kids division of the government. They didn't find it funny after I told them the truth.) Lets cut this short, You got to get back to work, and I don't get paid by the hour.
Anna/Nastia Muller drives her father's car flawlessly to the bowling alley, no near misses like the red car from a few weeks ago. She pulls into the parking lot it is a little full, but not bad and heads towards the parking spot she has decided is her spot on Wednesday nights, She pulls in at a slow speed and just continues on, or at least tries to. We go up on the stop guard, you know the lump of cement held in place by bits of rebar spaced so you know to stop. About that time I yell something stupid. It wasn't stupid like stop, no it was stupid like slow down. By the time I yelled it was too late and I should of been yelling for a do over. Needless to say she hits the building. I mean, what do you want the building was hiding and if I was driving that big black thing in front of me would of confused me too and yes I would of continued to go towards it until I stopped.
What is done is done. From the passengers side I backed the car off the wall , got out, walked around to the front of the car and see a big scratch on the bumper, missed the popped drivers fender and then I walked inside. Haven't talked to her about it.
The best part was when we drove home and I told her to pull into the parking lot at Shop Rite New City and she pulled into the turn lane and kept going, cutting of a car only, thank god. and then fighting me on parking the car. We're taking a brake, (no play on words there intended) from driving for a little while.
I guess maybe I have pushed her a little too much or maybe she wasn't concentrating, I don't know, it scares me. After the near miss with the red car, Teri wanted her to wear her contacts and she was when all this happened. I just don't know.
Parenting 101: When it really does hurt me more then it does you.
In this time of not hitting your children the expression 'This is going to hurt me more then it does you' has been lost. I know hitting their children, being one of them at the time, made me feel bad, but I never thought about how they felt for doing it. Teri and I started out hitting a little and gave it up rather quickly, not to be stylish or anything, just because violence makes for violent people.
This has nothing to do with what I'm going to talk about, it just happened to come into my head as I was thinking about what happened last night. And I guess, the expression, 'this is going to hurt me more then it does you' does apply.
On Wednesday, Elena got in trouble in school. She was making comments about some of the students in her class and was not doing her work and just being a general pain and a bully. She was asked to leave class and Teri and I got an e-mail about it

Well, there is the proof.
Our response was sent by Teri
I am so sorry about her behavior. I will have a talk with her, but please by all means do what you have to do. If she has to go to the principal's office pull detention, whatever needs to be done please do so. Thank you

That was the environment Teri and I faced when I got home. I talked to Elena quietly and told her she was being a bully and when her mother and I talked there would be a punishment.
When Teri got home she talked quietly with her and afterwards Teri and I talked about the punishment. Taking away her electronics doesn't seem to work so Teri came up with her writing fifty times 'I will treat anything with a heart the way I want to be treated.' I went to tell her the punishment, but I tweaked it,I gave her a choice of writing about being bullied in Russia in the orphanage or to write I will treat anything with a heart the way I want to be treated. I wanted her to think about how she felt when a kid bullied her in Russia. Guess which one she chose? I didn't know because she grabbed some paper and went to her room. She was given until Friday night to finish it.
Between Thursday and Friday night she was good.
Well of course she hadn't done it and I got smacked with a lot of waves of anger. It radiated off her like (here's another political joke) the hate a Trump supporter feels for Obama's Health Care program. ( Wait until They see what's coming.)
Elena grabs a few sheets of paper and a pen and starts her writing. About an hour later I hear Elena talking to Teri.
I'm upstairs in my bedroom, 10 pm passes, Nastia comes in and says 'good night', no Elena, about 11pm or so I realize I have been skipped. It seems I'm being punished for being true to my word.
The next morning, she gets up, walks by me without saying anything and I think it is still going on. On her way back she does say 'good morning' like nothing happened. I guess nothing did happen. And the world will continue to turn, even if my feeling were hurt last night.

Good morning!
I wanted to let you know that I asked Elena to leave class today. She refuses to complete any work and her comments to other students are very inappropriate. She comes to class very angry every day and takes it out on others. She negatively comments on other students' answers and is making them feel uncomfortable. These behaviors cannot be tolerated and she will be asked to leave the class and go to the assistant principal. I have spoken with her many times and explained that she cannot behave in this manner.
Thank you!

Things were going well right up to the point on Friday night that I remembered that Elena had not handed in her paper. So I go up to her room, it's about 9 pm, and ask her for her paper. I mean, what is a punishment worth if no one hands it in. Where would We be if after the Declaration of Independence thing went on the way they were. We'd all be speaking English instead of American. We'd have a Queen Elizabeth instead of King Donald.Update - Elena was wonderful today!! She completed work and was very pleasant. I am so proud of her!
Have a great night!

Talking and not watching the road
I guess We all know where this one is going. Let Me start by saying there was no accident, just a few more gray hairs on my overly gray and bald head.
Nastia has been doing a lot of night driving. Her work behind the wheel is better every time she drives and so I push her to drive in harder places and maybe push her a little too much to be a little more aggressive behind the wheel. An example of this would be when she came to the intersection of Kings highway and Congers Rd, she was on Kings and wanted to turn left on to Congers to go over the Causeway. The Light was green and I would speed up and go through, she on the other hand stays the same speed, the light changes and she stops. I told her she should have sped up, she said no. That was a good thing. She was uncomfortable going through the light and said so. The only problem was when the light changed there were cars in the other direction some turning, some going straight and a car letting her go left. It was too much for her to take in a once and I had to tell her to go, someone is letting you turn. She did and it was OK.
We go through the 'S' turn and hill were she has problems keeping the car in her lane and keeping up road speed and then we pass the North High School.
As We are coming up on Brewery Rd, a red small car, like a Honda or something wants to turn left on to Brewery Rd. I'm watching the car as Nastia is asking me a question about the Hot Dog House and how will she know when they call her. While She is asking the question, I notice she has not slowed down or moved to the right and if things don't change soon We are going to end up in that poor unfortunate persons back seat. When it is obvious She's does not see the car I yell 'STOP!'. Thank God, with out hesitation She slams on the brakes. I watch us get closer and closer and think, 'We're not going to make it we're going to hit this guy. Through some luck or something other, the car stops short of hitting the red car. We sit there in silence for a few moments and the red car moves up a few feet. I smile and think it was good We didn't need that few feet.
Nastia is still freaked about the almost hit and has trouble going around the car while there are other cars behind her. Finally the red car turns and we get to the Bowling Alley without any further adventure.
I didn't talk about the almost accident until we were at the bowling alley. I asked her the question that will always be on my mind for the rest of my life. I asked, "Did You not see the car because it was dark?"
Her reply was, "I wasn't paying attention and I can see fine."
For those who are not up on the subject of her eyes. I've told her and her sister the only people who can tell her they can't handle driving under certain conditions because of their poor eye sight are the two of them. And to please error on the side of caution.
GOD KEEP THEM SAFE.
